No, only BranchGroups may be added or removed from a live scene.
You can add a BranchGroup to another BranchGroup.
So, assuming you wanted to add a Shape3D to a live scene.
Your shape is represented by /S2\
Your current live scene could be represented by
Locale---BranchGroup1---TransformGroup1---Shape3D1
or[L]---(BG1)---(TG1)---/S1\
You can add your /S2\ by attaching a (BG2) to (BG1)
[L]---(BG1)---(TG1)---/S1\
\
----(BG2)---/S2\
(I hope this ASCII art lines up, this mail client isn't using a fixed font)
Of course, there's no reason you couldn't put a TG in front of BG2 to place
it somewhere else in the world
