I've now deleted the Classpath entry thoughtlessly inserted by QuickTime,
and it's all working fine. How infuriating (yet characteristic) that
Micro$oft completely changed the procedure for editing Classpath, while
leaving the old method apparently available but in fact non-functional, and
didn't put anything about the Classpath variable in their general Windows
'Help' system! How are people supposed to know about this when they switch
from one version of Windows to another??
Okay, that's enough griping from me. Thanks again to all who helped...
