Cheers J.D.  I had a feeling that card was really not the sort of thing you
want to use for 3D graphics.  As it happens I've just been given access to
a gorgeous, blindingly fast new Dell thing with a 3Dlabs Wildcat II 5110,
and I couldn't possibly complain about the frame rate on this.  Woohoo!

I'd still be curious to have an answer to the question about the
full-screen workaround and hardware acceleration though...
