Hi Fred, The lack of a high resolution clock/interval timer in Java is something many people have had issues with and has been a concern of Java3D team for quite some time.
As a result the next version of Java 3D (1.3) includes a utility com.sun.j3d.timer.J3DTimer which provides access to high resolution interval timers within the underlying OS. The resolution of the timer is platform specific and can be queried through the API.
