yes, in my recent experiences, to solve this problem is simply to not use Windows XP. I have had similar behaviors even without Java3D. Wait until a few service packs come out, at least that is my opinion. Windows 2000 isn't as bad, just need to wipe out and reinstall every so often (every month or two).
