Particle systems are usually used in games to simulate explosions / blood 
/ water / rain etc.

It's just a set of points moving according to an algorithm, with a decay 
time and a visual representation (squares, dots, whatever).

Java3D does not support it directly � you have to roll your own. It's not 
hard. In less than one day I've got a generic particle system that has 
abstracted geometry and seeding. Soon it will have collision detection 
and varying acceleration over time too.
