Hey
folks,
This is an FYI for
anyone who is running Java 3D on laptops with the SavageIX chipset.
I have
recently discovered a "blue screen of death" (BSOD) crash when running a Java
3D-based applet with the S3 SavageIX chipset: when I run the
applet and close the browser, the operating system will crash
with a BSOD (no recovery possible). This will even happen with
HelloUniverse.
The BSOD mentions
the offending DLL is s3avmx.dll, which is one of the DLLs for the chipset
driver. The driver version number is 7.40.44 (the latest), and strangely
the previous driver version I have (7.40.35) works fine. Note that the
SavageIX is a mobile chipset, used only in laptops, including the IBM Thinkpad
T20 series (T20, T21, and T22), which is a popular line of
laptops.
Here are the
detailed specs from my test:
IBM Thinkpad T21
laptop
S3 SavageIX, version
7.40.44 from IBM
Windows 2000
Professional
Internet Explorer
5
Java Runtime
Environment 1.3.1_02
Java 3D 1.2.1
OpenGL
If you have seen
this problem and know a solution, let me know. I will temporarily continue
to use the old driver, but that is a "solution" which may not work for our
customers. Thanks.
