VRML 1.0 & VRML-97 can be animated with Java3d, the VRML 1.0 should first be converted, then any of several loaders can be used, Sun created some popular VRML Loaders for Java and donated them to Web3d.org and they have been successfully used for years for games, complex animations, and animating VRML in a browser.
The VRML file format is frequently used in research, academia, and professional engineering where requirements and preferances call for portability beyond a single vendor, OS, or hardware platform and matched with Java3d both the data and the programs are portable across high end and low end systems, new & old, internal & external systems ... including the web.
