Dear Dave,

I am in a similar situation as yourself, perhaps I can offer some insight

>This is my first post to this list so i hope you guys can help me out. For
>my final year project i am implementing a 3D object editor in Java3D.

As am I. I am working on generating a 3 dimensional surface that can be
interactively edited by the user.

I can't be positive, because I haven't gotten this working myself, but I
certainly think it is within the possibility of Java3D. If you look at
the PickTranslateBehavior that comes with the Java utils, you will notice a
behavior that can pick objects in 3D and move them in the XY plane.

Similarly, if you look in the source for Dave Selman's book, there is a
behavior called TornadoMouseTranslate that moves an object in the plane
parallel to the view. Unfortunately, this behavior does not perform
picking. Currently, I am working on merging these two behaviors into one
general behavior. It is possible that someone else have done this
already, but I couldn't find it. (List Readers: Has anyone?)

If I make any headway, I will certainly contact you, though I suggest you
start looking there.

Regards,
John O'Hara
