I can't speak for the VRML97 loader.  But for using our loader one
possible problem you might have is the underlying colors under a texture
might be "black" (or near black) so even with a bright light a texture
will come out VERY dark.

Load your model in 3D Studio Max and make sure your ambient and diffuse
(specular too if you care about that) colors are reasonably bright (try
a near white like 204,204,204) and that combined with a bright light
source should illuminate your texture fairly well.

Also double check the bounds of your light sources to make sure they
include your model!
