They are probably intercepted by the JWindow that you're application is using (because of a swing-related problems perhaps, try searching the java3d mailing list archives). Try sending them to it instead of the canvas3d, or don't use swing.
This rational is derived from the fact that I have an application set up similar, and the only difference is that I do not use any swing components.
