Hi, sometimes ago I found on the gl4java site a link to a library called j-Free-D. It is a Java 3D implementation using GL4Java. And GL4Java runs on MacOS. However, the web-site of j-Free-D is dead and j-Free-D only implements java3d 1.1. I could only find a tar archive with it. I don't know how much of it works and how fast it is. But if there aren't anylicense reasons, someone could may start maintaining it.
