It seems as though you are trying to do things that are not compatible.
The view information returned by a Java3D Loader only gives you the
parent TransformGroup. There is no other information about it. You will
have no idea which TG belongs to which Viewpoint VRML node in the source
file. There's no real way to make a correspondence either as that raw
node contains no DEF information or any of the other fields of a VRML
Viewpoint such as the description string. So, for the purposes of a a UI
selection tool, you aren't going to get much useful information from
this step.

I'll probably be easier to spot in the crowd than Alan. Look for the
tall guy with long, blue, shoulder-length hair with a loud voice and
aussie accent. There's not too many of us that fit that description :)
