Yes I agree. Unfortunately texturing doesn't seem to have been one of
the strong points of Java3D - either in features or getting bugs fixed.
However, as the J3D guys have told me, that's not their fault really and
came from a little higher up the ladder. That problem is now gone and
they were hoping to get a lot of the texturing stuff much stronger over
the next few releases. That's good!

Well, it's an answer, and at least confirms my suspicions that I'm not
totally nuts (just 99%) and was doing something stupid. I don't think
you'll be hearing much from the j3d team right now as a number of them
will be busily packing and preparing for Siggraph next week.
