 I'm going to create a sample based on the j3d.org.overlay library and I'll post it to see if poeple get better performances than me.

I hope that overlay will work for me too soon !

Not really. We have one demo based on Xj3D where we are not seeing any
decrease in performance at all when we add overlays in. This is a 50K
polygon model with reasonable level of texturing and a couple of lights.
There's 5 overlay objects on the screen. On a 1.2Ghz PIII/GF2 we
maintain about 30FPS.
