Java3d runs great on Linux, that's what I do.

I use Blackdown.org's Java3d VM,
Sun's Forte / Netbeans ( free ) IDE,
Sun's VRML Loaders, Sun's OpenOffice.org / Star Office,
and Mozilla on Red Hat Linux 7.2
( I'll upgrade Red Hat when 8.1 comes out
in a few weeks ).

Everything works great, Unix ( and Linux )
were made by and for developers, convient
command line commands are available and
helpful: ps, kill, nice, sh, etc.

The only minor complaint is people giving out source
code don't always include the proper shell ( ".sh" )
files to execute the programs, but the Windows ".bat"
can be converted by changing the "\" to "/", etc.

Java is portable, it works, I do it all the time,
my programs work in Windows & Linux, in Mozilla
( on both ) and Microsofts Internet Explorer
( on that Co's OS ) running with the Sun VRML Loaders
animating Web3d.org's VRML based H-Anim Avatars
with Gesture Animations in responce to user commands.

Java applets runs nicely in Mozilla on Linux
( you have to set it up properly ).

A Sun ships Linux with some of their smaller
servers and a Sun Desktop Linux distribution is rumored
to be in the works, but you can't believe
everything you read on the web ;^) ....

Java, Linux, and VRML are portable solutions that
give developers excellent support for
portable web 3d web applications.
