Hi Paul, I'm currently in the final stages of a PhD at the university of Sydney in Information Visualisation (specifically 3D Graph Visualisation). All my papers to date have mentioned java3d:
http://www.cs.usyd.edu.au/~visual/publications/tim.html A number of our final year undergrad CS students find Java3d very useful in their dissertation projects. Part of my research (and associated development) is commercially based, I'm funded by the CMCRC (www.cmcrc.com). I've also developed a fairly significant Java3d based 3D graph Visualisation system (LGPL): http://www.wilmascope.org Obviously I'm keen for Java3d development at Sun to continue! Hope this is useful to you, Good Luck!
