Once upon a time, long before I finally became an independent
trainer and developer, I was employed at a factory with all kind of interesting things as NC-machines and CADCAM systems. The management was OK, you could have a nice talk to them, but they were also very strict if necessary. You had to perform, otherwise you had problems. They always tried to motivate us. So, good stable management and real examples to us normal guys. They were performers themselves. Until the first rumours came up about the possible close of
this company. While we normal guys continued to do our best and still tried to deliver qoed quality to the customers, the management turned around as leaves at a tree. They literally dropped everything they were working on, were outspoken negative about the company and soon dissapeared, leaving the normal guys to clean up the mesh and still produce value for the customers. That's exactly the way I, and possibly others in this java3D
community, feel now. We're still here, doing good work, but the management has already left the building. And fired the last two colleaques we still had at the office. Not interested anymore. In my opinion, somebody should at least tell us whether it is
still useful to continue our work on java3D. I know, we never had to pay for the license, it was all free. So there are no obligations to us. However, we also invested our time and efforts in using this software. In fact we were the best supporters of it, telling everybody how great it was and still is. During my years as a sales executive I learnt that to sell
succesfully to large organizations, you never should go in at a too low level. People at a lower level only can say "No". To say "Yes" they need other people at a level above them. Well, under the present circumstances we cannot expect anybody on our user level to answer questions about the future of Java3D. So, let's go at a higher level and ask the boss himself. So, this message is directed to mr. Scott McNealy. He probably
won't be on this mailing list but I am sure one of his advisers is. I would like to tell him this: Dear mr McNeally, we admire you and the software your company
gave to the world. We don't expect you to reveal anything your competitors may use. But even if java3D is going to be discontinued, you hopefully could tell us that you will have tools be developed to convert our existing programs to anything what is replacing it. In other words, we like to hear that it still makes sense to continue our current work. Kind regards,
Dirk L. van Krimpen
