This from Apple's Devsite FAQ (http://developer.apple.com/java/faq/#api_1):
"Q: When will Java3D or Java Advanced Imaging be available on Mac OS X? A: Apple would like to have Java3D and JAI on Mac OS X. We're working with Sun to try to bring both over to our platform. There are currently no announced plans. A very viable alternative to Java3D on Mac OS X is jogl. Whereas Java3D is its own environment/API, jogl provides direct native bindings to the OpenGL API, allowing it to easily provide access to new OpenGL functionality, such as nVidia's vertex programming API. A version of jogl designed to work with Java 1.4.1 on Mac OS X can be found at http://jogl.dev.java.net/. In the case of JAI, which is a pure-Java API, many developers have successfully downloaded the Unix or Linux versions from java.sun.com and simply used the jar files without the accompanying native "performance packs"." It's probably dated, but hey, better than nothing!
