All,

Regarding the discussion thread from last week, I decided to send an e-mail to
Doug Twilleager, the lead at Sun for Java 3D.

You can judge his answer for yourself.  8^/

Subject: Re: Future of Java 3D is in Question

We are actively working on plans for how we evolve the Java 3D API.
We are looking to get the development community much more involved
in the process.  We don't want to comment until we have the plans in
place and ready to go.  Too much confusion is already out there, so we
don't want to announce until we are ready.  Hopefully it will be soon.

Thanks for all the support.

Doug.

Doug,

I am a developer using Java 3D and am also a member of a list
for developers that use this set of packages.

A discussion thread has developed on this list that has some
list members stating that, internally, there are no plans for
Sun to enhance Java3D beyond version 1.4 - that Java 3D
is, to Sun internally, dead.

It's good to get perspectives from developers, but I would prefer to
hear it straight from the horse's mouth.

The questions are: Are there active plans at Sun to continue
enhancing the Java 3D set of packages? Will there be a
new specification (e.g. Java 3D 1.5) once 1.4 is accepted
by the development community?

I know there are other 3D projects out there like Xith3D that
have been born out of the concern for Sun's support of the
Java 3D impl.

Your honest insight into this matter would help the Java 3D
community, many of whom have spent a great amount of
time learning and building apps with Java 3D.

Thanks in advance for your time.
