.. is the server down or is my providers DNS acting funny again ? the IP i get
is 134.169.9.108. No http, no ftp, no ping.

But the orginal "texture.jpg" works fine und looks "good" ?

If that's the case java doesn't understand your jpg-file and the
java-image-loader-libs cause the problem. Try saving it in more standart
jpg-format. Or try png. And install the image-extension for java
(http://java.sun.com ... somewhere deep inside)
