That looks like a problem with mandrake, and not with java3d. Just for testing: run "glxgears". (It's a stupid little benchmark) If you get <1000 fps something with glx or drm/dri is wrong. The important files are /etc/X11/XF86Config and /var/log/XFree.0.log and the output of glxinfo.
