It runs the examples (aside from that rendering problem) fine under 
Windows 98, but I can't vouch for NT.

This is a long shot, but you might try the recent JIT update for 
JDK1.2 (available on Sun's site) if you're not using it already.

Or look for conflicting bios setting if you think this problem might 
go beyond Java3d; these cards are pretty sensitive to certain bios 
settings such as write cache pipelining (see 
http://www.stb.com/tech/faqs/v4400faq.html)
