How does one determine and ensure the use of available hardware? I can't find
anything in the documentation that says anything about hardware acceleration
enabling.

We've had Java 3D running on a FireGL 1000 Pro card for the PC, and it works
fine. It could be that your configuration is messed up somehow, and it's doing
software rendering instead of taking advantage of the hardware acceleration.
