I've tried using both the OpenGL and the DirectX version of the Java3d API.
>From a programming perspective they are identical I think, however my
experience was that the rendering quality of the OpenGL library was a lot
nicer - maybe this is why the DirectX version is still Beta.
I am using a ATI Rage 128 card and their was one call in the J3D1.1.1 OpenGL
library that caused an exception, so I tried the j3D1.1.1 DirectX version.
This caused no exceptions but there were some problems with clipping plains
etc.. - it definately didn't look as nice. However, now I'm using Java3d
1.1.2 OpenGL and it looks nice and causes no exceptions with my video card.
My two cents.
