Yes, Java3D is able to load VRML97 geometries. It can even load VRML
animation (to a certain extend). For loading VRML97 files, see the VRML
working group:
http://www.web3d.org/WorkingGroups/vrml-java3d/
The Sun web page also has a Bv loader which is used to load VRML
animation. I hope this helps.
