Look at the charts attached to Jonathan Schwartz's blog entry on the Q1 2009 results at http://blogs.sun.com/jonathan/date/200810. Java, broken out in terms of revenue, has brought in around $220 million per year for the last couple of years (no details before that). Not knowing the costs involved, and just guessing, it seems like a pretty tidy sum of money, which should more than cover the costs involved. I think it must also be pretty clear to Sun that ignoring or "letting Java die" in some way would be killing one of the golden geese at the company, if nothing else in terms of branding. I can't imagine it, anyhow. Stepping back a bit, the revenue for fiscal 2008 as a whole was just under $14 billion. That's a heck of a lot of money coming in on a yearly basis. Obviously their net income hasn't been doing well, but just looking at the total revenue picture gives you one reason to believe the company's not going away any time soon. I am sorry to hear about the layoffs, in any case. Sad day! I wish Sun employees the best in finding a good place to work if they are among the unfortunate ones. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "The Java Posse" group.
