Conservative evolution != frozen either.

That said, I don't believe they handled the closures proposals well at 
all.  There was really /no/ open or timely feedback about the BGGA 
proposal, for instance.  No one was well served by this.  I think they 
needed to take the time to give it serious thought and give an open, 
timely, and thoughtful answer to the proposal.  Not finding the time to 
give such consideration to proposals on which so much effort was 
obviously expended was a really bad step on Sun's part.  In my book this 
mis-step is what's really wasted so much energy and led to so much FUD 
about Java's language evolution.
