Episode 227 flubbed the VisualVM news item pretty seriously.

Yes, it is a NetBeans RCP-based application and version 1.1 was released
-- that much is true.

Beyond this, however, things got mangled, which is a bit surprising
considering the exposure it had at the last two JavaOne's. [I know the
Posse was busy during the conference.]

Sun's vision for VisualVM is for it to be an "all in one troubleshooting
tool". As such it contains or provides plug-ins for:

    * Slightly pared down versions of NetBeans' CPU and memory profilers
o Will only work for Sun and sufficiently Sun-like Java 6 VMs
            on the local machine
+ Apple's VM works, it sounds like HP's will soon, IBM's
                  does not
    * A slightly improved version of jconsole's MBeans tab
    * JMX and vmstat based functionalities to
o Display local and remote Java applications
o Display application configuration and runtime environment info
o Display application performance, memory consumption,
            threads, etc
o Take thread and heap dumps
    * And so on...

VisualVM is open source and is designed for extension via Plug-Ins,
having documented application extension points as well as the NetBeans
RCP's plug-in system.

VisualVM has been bundled with Sun JVMs since Java 6 Update 7 and 1.1 is
bundled with Update 11. Beyond Sun, it is up to the licensee -- HP
bundles it and IBM does not, for instance.
