We've given up on J2ME and are just moving to J2SE for our embedded devices. Of course the problem then is that Sun wants to force you to include the entire monolith J2SE including all the cruft you will never use (like the CORBA APIs). So it all comes back to modularity and Java's lack of it. It is both a technical problem and a business licensing issue. I was hoping some of the Java kernel work being done in the applet world would make it back to the J2ME world, but I haven't seen any sign of that.
BTW, this is the very reason that entire Fan runtime is for the most part written using no 1.5 language features.
