We probably have 20 Java devs, about 6 of them are female. Mainframe team is probably a similar proportion. As is our MIS team.
Teams I've recruited have often ended up 50/50. But I notice one project team I had no involvement in recruiting is 100% male. Go figure. I think it benefits the group dynamics having a mixed team - but I've never recruited on a gender basis (besides the obvious legal issues I feel gender just doesn't matter). Interestingly, thinking over it, there tends to be a ethnic breakdown, almost all of the female developers I know are of a Chinese or Indian or Eastern European background. Two who I would say were Anglo Saxon Australian are now out of the IT industry. Most mainstream media seem to blame lack of women in IT on the 'lonely geek' stereotype of an IT worker, I think its cultural expectations steering women away from subject areas perceived to be male.... Regarding the female co-worker listening to the posse, I can only ask some of them and see what they say. I'd be interested to know myself.
