I first used Micro Focus COBOL back in 1991. The company I worked for had
millions of lines of COBOL running on a PR1ME minicomputer. Most of that
code had originally been written in the 60's, and maintained over the years.
I got the chore of taking a good chunk of that code and making it work with
the MF compiler so we could move into the PC market with our software. That
was loads of fun, especially since the guy who wrote all that code was close
to 90 years old and was the meanest SOB I've ever met. He also hated PCs and
thought they were a fad. You can imagine how "helpful" he was when I had a
question.
