In filings to the SEC, Sun revealed that three companies put forward bids to buy it. Besides Oracle, the filings mention company A that started the whole shebang at the end of last year (which is believed to be IBM) and company B (unknown - may be HP, Cisco or Fujitsu). Oracle originally just wanted the software side of Sun, company B eventually walked away from a deal, and Oracle offered $9.50 a share, compared to IBM's $9.10 - so Oracle got Sun.
