Unofficially, I haven't had much success loading new ROM's onto either of my phones (TMobile G1, and Google IO Magic/Ion). They are pretty locked down actually.
So while the possibility of loading a new OS is there, there are still roadblocks (similar to Jailbreaking the iPhone). I am trying to load Jesus Freke's ROM, which currently includes multi-touch, and Root access (among a few other neat additions). I will get it to work eventually, but it is not a trivial thing to do. Loading apps from sources other than the official market is trivial, flashing a new ROM is not. But, the openness of the platform is something to celebrate, it empowers us as users/developers, and creates a very open, flexible platform.
