I would say that this is a naive assessment. The monumental blocker to other operating systems has been Windows. I could back this up with a list of operating systems that failed to take hold that were not Unix based.
More over, the biggest obstacle to hardware is also Windows. MS still sets the spec as to what our hardware should look like. Want a better mousepad experience? Move to a platform that doesn't need to conform to MS specifications if you can find one. As much as I don't appreciate Apple's attempt to control everything, MS has killed much much more than Apple could ever dream of killing. Look at the history of the sparc chip and tell me that MS hasn't damaged the industry. Then just go beyond Sparc and look at many of the other technologies that everyone seems to forget that MS either ripped or some how strangled.
