I lost my respect for Joel a while ago - he comes at you in very bold, definitive and authoritative fashion (especially on StackOverflow where he's down right annoying). Exceptions cater well to OO, you can centralize error handling and dispatching via polymorphism as well as associate whatever context that's needed. I don't think (hope) many in here wants to go back to interpreting return values.
