I can't access the marked either from Scandinavia, but the N1 is by far the easiest phone to modify that I have tried (it's actually designed to have it's bootloader unlocked) so you can just use marked enabler. Obviously it would be great if Google would just hurry up and open the marked to everyone... we pay with Google checkout anyway.
As for the hardware, I'd say yes. Best screen I have ever seen with 800*480 and the snapdragon is about 2-3 times faster than the ARM on Hero/Magic.
