I doubt that 90% of users just use 100 apps - I counted more than 30
on my iPhone that I use at around once a week or more (some I use
several times a day) if I'm not on the road.

You would probably need to survey a couple of hundred folks,
representative of the overall device user base, what apps they use how
to come up with an estimate.  Maybe soon companies like Nielsen that
already give TV show ratings and Internet ratings will hand out "app
ratings".
