There's a market for ebook readers with "epaper" displays that are
aimed primarily at reading printed page if they get the price down
around $150.

One way to do that is a Wi-Fi only approach. Considering you can
download books (printed and/or audio) and then still be able to read
them when outside of a Wi-Fi hotspot, this actually could be a very
successful approach. If I'm going to go on a week vacation, I need
merely load up my ebook reader via the Wi-Fi in my home before
departing. I do this already with podcast on my ipod (and audio
books).

For instance, Amazon could come out with a Wi-Fi only model of the
Kindle and probably sell it for around $129. This price point vs $495
to get into an iPad is very compelling if one's primary interest is
reading (and/or listening to books).

I'd definitely buy that device. I for one still believe in the need of
an ebook reader that uses ambient lighting instead of LCD
backlighting. I don't want to stare at my novel for hours with it
glaring back at me and causing eye strain. It's a different kind of
activity that working with a computer display - when you're reading
for pleasure you want to have a totally comfortable experience, as
opposed to have to endure some annoyance.
