No, you shouldn't use pidgin then, but Emesene - this is an MSN clone - even my webcam that did not work out-of-the-box with Skype (even if just a small change necessary for get it work in Skype) worked out of the box with Emesene. That said, I really use only Skype. > Back when I was trying linux, there are tons of bittorrent clients for > windows but there was only azureus as a more viable option. Even Miro works (which is usually meant for video downloads). > I couldn't use virtualdub to compress my video at that time ( I am > sure there were something else, but I gave up) I wouldn't either use Virtualdub on Linux - I used it on Windows occassionally. On Linux there are others although I heard that each one may have it's issues. PiTiVi is the one that Ubuntu now installs by default on a fresh install. But I am not doing video - just try it out. KDEnlive is also mentioned frequently. > iTune is another hassle. I buy normal music CDs and rip them down for my private use. But anyway good music nowadays IMHO is rare. Didn't buy a CD for years now (and I bought many - have a collection of over 300). > At the end, I feel I really OS really doesn't matter to me, why spend > so much time on something I don't care, I will just use windows. Oh, you think that the base system for all your doing does not matter? - OK, it may be correct, that spending 80% of your time in NetBeans or Eclipse the OS sounds to be a minor thing. But believe me, that properties like stability, reliability, security do really matter. When I was still on Windows I had blue screens of death while at a customer needing to implement changes. It took me more than 2 hours to find the reason and recover - luckily I was able to recover and continue working. In other multiple cases (on different hardware during the last 10 years) I had silent corruption of files. Guess how long it took me to find out the real reason of weird errors and find out which file(s) were affected. Other common issue: Update one tool (I do not use only my IDE) and another does not work any more. I could continue forever with samples. I really had the nose full of stuff like that. The OS matters a lot! It is like the question if you build your house on sand or on a rock. It is true that some hardware can cause a little struggling, but I do pay attention on what hardware I buy. I lately bought a Samsung print+scan+fax device. Works like a charm. My Dell-Laptop also works flawless (but I told them that I want a raw OS-less thing and it will get Linux on it so they could serve me accordingly). -- Martin Wildam -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "The Java Posse" group.
