I will explain why I got certified. I only graduated in 2007 and so am
at a phase where years of experience work against me because I don't
have huge amounts. My experience has been that in many cases I could
run rings around many people who on paper had far many years of
experience then I do. I don't say that to show off but so many
developers get to a comfort level and then don't push themselves to
get any better whereas I am always trying to improve my programming
ability. When it comes to recruitment, all they care about is years of
experience which I haven't had. I hoped that Sun Java Certification
might help prove my level of competence in spite of lack of years of
experience. It might make no difference but I don't see it did any
harm.

I have more recently gone back to University to do research. This is a
huge career risk which could easily backfire. I expect having done so
will make it hard to get another business job because in the UK
business turn their noses up as academic experience as very much
inferior in nature to business experience. If things don't work out
with the research or in Academia in general and I have to go back to
the business world with my tail between my legs I want everything I
can in my favour to help me get a job.
