-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Well, I'm in a different situation as I'm not married, but I've got a lot (= probably too many) interests that take time... Not that I'm comparing them to a wife, of course, as I'm stil the one who decide. But I've experienced a slight decrease in my learning skills, in the sense that I fatigue more than in the past. I must also say that I've always had a very "hands on" attitude to learn things, that is I don't like a lot reading too much theory - I usually remember very few things - while I learn a lot from practicing.
That's said, I find virtual communities such as JUGs and the JavaPosse (and others) one of the most important places to stay update and learn. Once I've decided that a given technology is worth of my interest, I immediately start a prototype using it. While having some concrete goals about having my software used is really time-expensive, and thus they would probably be against the "married with children" scenario, dedicating even small time slices (= pomodoros, maybe) to writing software can be very efficient if you optimize your workflow. For what concerns podcasts, I must say they aren't useful to me. Probably it's also the matter that being in foreign language I must concentrate a bit on them, so I hardly can do other things while I listen to them. What I appreciate in written language is that I can apply fast-reading techniques (which I practiced a lot, since when I got myself at school without having studied the day's lesson and being frightened of being questioned ;-). BTW, usually I don't use train nor subways and I rather found myself driving. While it could be a good timing to listen to a podcast, I've discovered that I can make a better use of that time by just thinking. You might find it crazy, but I usually review my current projects' design (or my plan to do things) during the 30-60mins of driving time and I find it very useful to consolidate things. - -- Fabrizio Giudici - Java Architect, Project Manager Tidalwave s.a.s. - "We make Java work.
