For my part I hope to try and keep skills in a few languages for the
sake of Job security / employability.

At the moment I have skills in Java and C# .Net as well as C/C++ to a
lesser degree and at the moment am learning Objective-C for
development of a native Mac O/S X background service I need. I also
know some basic PHP and Perl and had a brief look at Python.

As much as I have favourites I am not prepared to cut of my nose to
spite my face or make myself a martyr by sticking to just one platform
and refusing to use anything else.
If Java dies which I sincerely hope it does not I have at lest other
programming platforms I can fall back on such that I should still be
able to get a job.

I did .Net when that was the only work I could find. Much as I did not
like it I would still do the same again if it was the only work I
could get.

Not that many people get to do exactly what they enjoy the most. A lot
of people, particularly now in a recession, will take what work they
can get. If they have the option of choosing
to do something they would prefer to do they count themselves luck.
Few get a dream job and many have to make compromises to do something
more or less in the right area which
might not be exactly what they want to do.

I like to hope that the chances of Java and .Net and C/C++ dying in
rapid succession is highly unlikely.
I was also flirting with the idea of getting into Games development.
Nothing may come of that but that space is dominated by C++.
If I did decide I wanted to go into that field I doubt I would be
doing much Java. At this point what I have seen so far makes me think
it would take a lot of time and effort to build up the skills I would
need not to mention there are few jobs available and what jobs there
are will be aggressively competed for. Maybe I am going off topic a
bit but it is an example that sometimes certain given fields are
dominated by a given technology such that people are forced to choose
between being in the field they want vs using the technology
they want.
