Interesting that you should mention the appeal of object-oriented languages... I've heard before (all too often) that companies won't consider Scala because they've already been sold on OO The language so frequently gets brought up in discussions of Functional programming that the other side of the coin gets forgotten.
This is a fallacy of course; Scala is a hybrid, it's both functional *and* object oriented. In fact, it's actually *more* object-oriented than Java - no primitives, every value is an object - no static methods, the same functionality (and more!) is achieved by singletons instead So next time someone says to you that Java must be used because it's OO... Remember that that same person has, by their very own statement, just argued *even more strongly* in favour of Scala.
