Sun's existing Java silos are old and unsophisticated for this
purpose. I'd argue Android could not have succeeded had it been based
on JME or JSE. Remember, Sun/Oracle does not allow partial
implementations. Interestingly, had Google gone with Mono, they
would've been in a better position since 1) language and API are two
separate things and 2) the MCP permits whatever supersets you may
ponder.

Yeah and that's BS. Lars Bak who used to run the HotSpot team is now
working on his 8'th virtual machine (V8 for Chrome) and there are only
so many ways to optimize performance. Patents seems to be used like
nukes as well as to try and keep employees tied down. If we let
patents rule the day, we'd be stuck in the mud constantly. We need to
get rid of that crap and send the lawyers to a remote island where
they can do as little harm as possible.
