I agree Kevin. However, I don't think Java can be shelved by Oracle, given the influence & competitive edge it gets to counter Microsoft.
Follow the money rule is correct, but fending of competitors -especially copycat ones- will be in the mind of Larry Ellison.. He would be looking at the long term strategy & growth of his technology/products too while making these moves.. It is not just the money..It is about 'how long will I keep making money'.. Maybe these would give us something interesting -just maybe.. http://www.businessweek.com/mediacenter/video/newsmakers/857db34e9b4fb861f83cead2c52181de580095ad.html http://blogs.sun.com/arungupta/entry/developer_tools_strategy_by_oracle http://weblogs.java.net/blog/arungupta/archive/2010/01/28/glassfish-strategy-oraclesun http://www.dba-oracle.com/user_group_beyond_oracle10g_21st_century.htm http://www.pcworld.com/article/187440/javas_future_uncertain_under_oracle_grip.html http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/OpenSolaris-future-assured-by-Oracle-942161.html http://www.itbusinessedge.com/cm/blogs/vizard/seeing-the-future-through-oracle/?cs=39031 If you have better ones, please share.Would love to read..
