As a follow up, I've updated my HTC Desire with the Cyanogenmod and Froyo (version 6, RC 2) and its working a lot better than the default Sense UI that ships with HTC.
I was very reluctant to do this kind of hack, mainly because I'm losing the apples to apples comparison between what a normal user experiences on and iPhone vs an HTC phone. But at the end of the day, its my phone, so I need to get the most out of it, so cyanogenmod I go.
