Regarding automatic gears, I've only ever driven a manual, and I don't see the fuss. Apparently American drivers are more forgiving when they have to slow down for, say, a pedestrian, because it takes less manual effort to get back up to speed afterwards. By that logic, though, I suppose gearboxes must go on strike in Paris.
My car is underpowered - I had to replace the engine last year and the sensors don't seem to be correct now. So without a manual gearbox in the same situation I'd probably struggle to get up to motorway speeds safely. Other than that, I'd take an automatic any day.
