Regarding automatic gears, I've only ever driven a manual, and I don't
see the fuss.  Apparently American drivers are more forgiving when
they have to slow down for, say, a pedestrian, because it takes less
manual effort to get back up to speed afterwards.  By that logic,
though, I suppose gearboxes must go on strike in Paris.

My car is underpowered - I had to replace the engine last year and the
sensors don't seem to be correct now.  So without a manual gearbox in
the same situation I'd probably struggle to get up to motorway speeds
safely.  Other than that, I'd take an automatic any day.  People who
passed their test in an automatic are not allowed to drive manual cars
here, except foreigners (you get a year and then you have to take a UK
test).
