Tor, in a recent episode, talked about Apple integrating more SDI style user interfaces into their products (which was a turn off for him). I'm not sure it is as dramatic as he was making it. I see it as just another option. (albeit one were Apple could make a load of money) What's interesting, is Ubuntu just announced a similar strategic plan (http://blogs.computerworld.com/17224/ ubuntu_changes_its_desktop_from_gnome_to_unity).
Are we starting to see a strategic, industry wide, shift? For years, sun talked about the connected application as the future of the desktop. Is that what we are seeing? With M$ adding an appstore in W8, will they too follow a consumer single task model for their ui designs? With appstores in all the major OS's (i am including the way Ubuntu allows you to find and install/uninstall free apps), are we seeing an evolution away from the web as we know it?
