Amiga blended a main "workbench" screen on which incidental apps (cli
windows, small utilities, filesystem guis, and so on) with the capability
for an app to open its own screen and do whatever it wants.

I think the primary motivation for this feature at the time was to allow
different apps to run in different video modes. Obviously now the motives
are different. But it's still a striking resemblance.
